Why Do My Videos Have No Date?

Videos lose their dates more easily than photos. Here is why, and what can be put back.

Videos store dates in a different place from photos, and fewer programs write them properly. Copying a video between devices, or through a messaging app, very often leaves the date behind.

Google Takeout treats videos the same as photos: the real date goes into a .json file, and the video file itself comes out blank. Your video library then sorts by whatever the file system says, which is the download date.

Takeout JSON Metadata Fixer handles videos alongside photos, writing the date from the .json back into the file. It can also rename them by date so they sit in the right place even in apps that ignore metadata.
