What Should I Do With the -edited Photos in My Takeout?
Takeout gives you the original and your edited version. Here is how to choose without doing it by hand.
If you cropped or filtered a photo inside Google Photos, your export contains both files: the original as uploaded, and a second one with -edited in the name.
That is Google being careful rather than careless. It does not know which one you consider the real photo. But it doubles those entries in your library, and importing everything gives you two of each with no obvious way to tell them apart later.
Most people want the edited version, because that is the one they chose to make. Some want the originals back. Almost nobody wants both.
The app lets you decide once and applies it to the whole library: keep the edited version, keep the original, or keep both with names that make the difference obvious. Either way both get their real date written in, so whichever you keep lands in the right year. The first 500 photos are free.
