Why Is My Google Takeout Missing Photos?
Missing photos in a Takeout export usually means an incomplete download, a shared album, or a part you have not unzipped. Here is the checklist.
Before you panic, work through the usual causes. Most missing-photo reports turn out to be one of these.
Unzipped parts. A large library is split across many zip files. If you unzipped only some of them, or your unzip tool stopped on an error, you are looking at a fraction of your library. Count the parts Google listed against the parts you extracted. Shared albums. Photos other people added to a shared album are their data, not yours, and Takeout does not include them. This is the most common real cause. Album folders versus the year folders. A photo in an album may appear only in that album's folder, so the year folders look emptier than expected. An expired download. Links last about a week and allow a limited number of attempts, so a part downloaded late may be truncated.
If photos are genuinely missing, request a fresh export and choose smaller archive sizes. It is slower but far more reliable.
Once you do have everything, the next problem is that none of it has dates. The app reads every .json sidecar across all the extracted parts at once, writes the real capture date and GPS into each photo, and reports anything it could not match, so you can see the state of your library rather than guess at it.
