What Are the Archive and Trash Folders in My Google Takeout?
Your export has more folders than you expected. Here is what Archive, Trash, Bin and the untitled folders actually contain.
Your export contains more than the photos you see in the app, and the extra folders confuse people.
Archive holds photos you archived in Google Photos: hidden from the main grid but never deleted. These are real photos and you almost certainly want them. Trash or Bin holds what you deleted in the last 60 days. Google includes it because it technically still exists. Check it before you throw it away, because accidental deletions live here, but do not merge it blindly into your library or you will resurrect things you meant to remove. Photos from 2015 and similar year folders are your main library, organised by capture year. Untitled folders are usually albums you never named.
There are also metadata.json files describing each album rather than a photo. Those are harmless.
Whichever folders you keep, the photos inside them have the same problem: no dates. Point the app at the folders you want, and it writes the real capture date and GPS into every photo from the .json sidecars. You choose what goes in and what stays behind, and the result is one clean library instead of a pile of Google's internal folders. The first 500 photos are free.
