Can I Keep My Albums When Leaving Google Photos?
Albums survive as folders and nothing more. Here is what that means and what to do about it.
As folders, yes. As albums, no, and the difference matters.
There is no standard place inside a photo file to record that it belongs to your Italy 2019 album. So Takeout does the only thing it can: it gives you a folder per album with the photos inside. Copy the photos out and the grouping is gone.
Some destinations rebuild albums from those folders. Immich and PhotoPrism both make a decent job of it. Apple Photos will import folders as albums if you point it at them one at a time.
What you can make permanent is the date and the location, because those do have a standard home inside the file. The app writes them into every photo, so however your albums end up, your timeline and your map are correct everywhere. It can also preserve your existing folder structure exactly as it is. The first 500 photos are free.
