A camera writes whatever its internal clock says. If the clock was never set, or reset when the battery died, every photo from that period carries a wrong date, often the year the camera was made.
The useful thing is that the error is usually consistent. If every photo is three years and two months early, the whole set can be shifted by exactly that amount, and the order between them stays correct.
