Takeout JSON

Which Photo Should I Keep, the Edited One or the Original?

Takeout gives you both. Here is how to tell them apart and which to keep.

If you cropped or filtered a photo in Google Photos, the export contains two files. The original keeps its normal name. The edited one usually has -edited added before the extension.

The edited version is what you were looking at in Google Photos, so for most people that is the one to keep. The original is the untouched camera file, which matters if you ever want to redo the edit differently.

Keeping both doubles your storage for no benefit unless you edit seriously. Takeout JSON Metadata Fixer recognises the pairs and lets you choose which to keep, rather than leaving you to spot them by hand.
