Why Do My Screenshots Have No Date?

Screenshots never carry a capture date. Here is where the date actually lives and how to restore it.

Because a screenshot is not a photograph. No camera took it, so nothing wrote a capture date inside it.

Cameras add that information at the moment of capture. A screen capture skips all of that: it is just an image file. The same is true of pictures saved from WhatsApp, images downloaded from a browser, and most things forwarded through a chat app. Google Photos still recorded when each one was added, and put that date in the .json file beside it in your export. So the date exists, just not inside the picture.

The app writes it back in. It reads the date from the sidecar and puts it inside the file, so your screenshots stop landing on today and sort where they belong. It can also move screenshots into their own folder, so they stop appearing between your holiday photos. The first 500 photos are free.
