Why Is My Photo Map Empty After Moving From Google Photos?
Coordinates came back in the .json files and most photos never had any. Here is what to expect.
Two reasons, and both are worth knowing before you go looking for a bug.
The coordinates that do exist came back in the .json files rather than inside your photos, and no map reads those. So the information is there but invisible to your photo app.
And there are fewer than you think. Location is only recorded if it was switched on when the photo was taken. Screenshots have none. Chat images have none. Older photos frequently have none. In one real export we measured, only about 12 photos in 100 had a genuine location saved.
The app writes the real coordinates into the photos so your map fills in wherever there was something to fill in, and it treats Google's all-zero placeholder as unknown rather than dropping photos in the Atlantic. For the rest, you can set a place across a batch by hand. The first 500 photos are free.
